8 Buffer alternatives that answer DMs on desktop in 2026

Leaving Buffer because DMs stay in the phone app? Eight alternatives priced for 2026, from BetterSocials at $29 a month for four accounts to Agorapulse.

By The Martech Desk staff7 min read

Buffer costs $5 a channel a month on annual billing, as of August 2026, and its Community inbox covers comments only, with no DMs. Stay on Buffer if you mostly schedule posts and answer a few comments by hand. If your comments and DMs bring in customers, BetterSocials is our pick, with Metricool for the cheapest inbox and Agorapulse for a team that shares one.

Why people leave Buffer, and how we sorted the alternatives

Buffer is a scheduler first. You queue posts, Buffer publishes them, and its inbox collects the comments on those posts, YouTube included. Instagram and Facebook DMs stay in the phone app.

That split decides who should move. A business that sells in the DMs, such as a salon, a gym or a realtor, ends up running two places at once. A brand that only publishes has little reason to pay more.

So we sorted this list by job instead of by price. One tool does replies and scheduling together. Three are schedulers with an inbox on the side. Two are small-business inboxes, and two are team tools billed per user. Each price carries the month it was recorded.

Replies and scheduling in one tool: BetterSocials

BetterSocials is best for owners, creators and small agencies whose comments and DMs bring in customers. It posts to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn, then puts every comment and DM from those platforms into one inbox.

Buffer is cheaper per channel. Four channels on Buffer run 4 x $5 = $20 a month on annual billing. BetterSocials Creator covers four accounts and one login for $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026. Pro covers six accounts for $49 a month, or $39 yearly, where six channels on Buffer's annual billing come to $30. Team covers twelve accounts with unlimited teammates for $99 a month, or $79 yearly.

The difference buys three things:

  • Instagram, Facebook and TikTok DMs land in the same inbox as comments.
  • AI replies draft or send answers in your voice, built from your past replies and the AI rules you write, such as your prices, hours and booking link.
  • A keyword comment on Instagram or Facebook sends the person a DM with your link, with no flow builder.

Other tools cover parts of this. Vista Social pairs its inbox with DM automations, Agorapulse suggests AI replies, and Manychat automates DMs on a per-contact meter. BetterSocials puts the inbox, the voice-trained replies and keyword DMs together at a flat price, with unlimited contacts on every plan.

AI replies have three settings for comments and three for DMs: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. On Reply in my voice, a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives. When your AI rules don't cover a question, the comment or DM waits for you in Needs reply.

The limits are the platforms' own. On TikTok and YouTube, BetterSocials can't turn a comment into a private DM, so the keyword posts a public reply with your link there. BetterSocials has no X or email inbox. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial, and a card is required.

Scheduling first, with an inbox on the side

Metricool, Later and SocialBee stay closest to how Buffer works. You plan and publish, and an inbox sits next to the calendar.

Metricool

Metricool is best for a solo marketer who wants an inbox at the lowest cost. Metricool's inbox starts on its free plan and reads YouTube comments, and LinkedIn joins the inbox on Starter.

Later

Later is best for a brand that wants a low entry price now and an inbox once it moves up a tier. Starter is $18.75 a month billed yearly, or $25 monthly, as of September 2026. Later's Conversations inbox, which handles Instagram DMs and comments, Facebook DMs and comments and TikTok comments, starts on Growth at $37.50 a month billed yearly, or $50 monthly. Later has no YouTube or LinkedIn conversations.

SocialBee

SocialBee is best for freelancers who recycle evergreen posts by content category. Bootstrap is $29 a month, or just over $24 a month billed yearly, for five profiles and one user, as of October 2026. Accelerate is $49 a month, or about $40 a month billed yearly, for ten profiles. SocialBee's pricing page lists an engagement inbox for Facebook and Instagram comments and DMs, Threads and LinkedIn Company comments, and YouTube comments.

Inboxes built for a small business

Pallyy and Vista Social put more weight on the conversation side than Buffer does, at prices a small business can carry.

Pallyy

Pallyy is best for a local business that wants Google reviews in the same inbox as its social messages. Pallyy's inbox starts on Pro at $25 a month, or $20 billed yearly, as of October 2026. The Pro inbox covers Instagram DMs and comments, Facebook messages and comments, LinkedIn comments, TikTok comments and Google reviews. YouTube isn't in it.

Vista Social

Vista Social is best for a small team that wants DM automations next to its inbox. Professional is $99 a month, or $80 billed yearly, with two users, as of October 2026. Vista Social adds DM automations from Professional and offers a 14-day trial without a card.

Team inboxes at per-user prices

Agorapulse and Hootsuite suit a team that has outgrown Buffer and needs to share, assign and report on conversations. You pay per seat, so one person pays the full rate.

Agorapulse

Agorapulse is best for teams and agencies that assign conversations and report on them. Agorapulse is $79 per user a month on annual billing, as of July 2026. Every tier has one combined inbox, and the pricing page lists saved replies, reply collision detection, moderation rules and AI reply suggestions. For one person billed yearly, that's $40 a month more than BetterSocials Pro at $39 a month for six accounts.

Hootsuite

Hootsuite is best for larger teams with a budget for per-seat pricing. Hootsuite includes its inbox from Standard at $99 per user a month, billed annually, as of October 2026. Hootsuite handles YouTube through publishing and analytics. We priced Hootsuite against flat plans in what social media tools cost in 2026, from Hootsuite's $99 seat to flat plans.

Buffer and eight alternatives, priced side by side

Buffer and the eight alternatives appear below at their lowest entry price, which is the yearly billing rate where a vendor offers one, as of the months given above.

Per-user tools cost the most for one person, because the seat price stays the same however small the team. Tools that sell DM automation on a contact meter, such as Manychat, bill more as your audience grows. We sorted those by funnel job in six Manychat alternatives in 2026, sorted by the job your funnel does.

FAQ

What is the best Buffer alternative in 2026?

BetterSocials is the best Buffer alternative when comments and DMs bring in customers. BetterSocials puts Instagram, Facebook and TikTok DMs next to every comment, drafts replies in your voice and sends links on a keyword, from $29 a month for four accounts. Metricool suits a tight budget, and Agorapulse suits teams.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Buffer?

Buffer is already cheap per channel at $5 a month on annual billing. Later Starter is $18.75 a month billed yearly, and Pallyy Pro is $20 a month billed yearly. BetterSocials costs more, at $24 a month billed yearly for four accounts, and the difference buys DMs in the inbox and AI replies.

What do I lose if I leave Buffer?

You lose Buffer's per-channel pricing, which is the cheapest way here to schedule a handful of channels. Buffer's inbox also reads YouTube comments. If you need those, pick a replacement that reads them too, such as Metricool, SocialBee or BetterSocials.

How long does it take to switch from Buffer?

BetterSocials's setup guide says connecting an account takes under a minute, and you sign in on each platform's own screen, so your password never reaches BetterSocials. The company puts the whole setup at about ten minutes: connect the accounts, set one keyword and approve a few drafts.

Who should stay on Buffer?

Stay on Buffer if you mostly schedule posts and answer a few comments by hand. At $5 a channel on annual billing, Buffer is the cheapest per channel on this list. Move when DMs and comment questions start bringing in customers and answering them from the phone app takes over your day.
