Buffer charges $5 a channel a month on annual billing, as of August 2026, and its Community inbox answers comments on every plan but holds no DMs. If you want more reply work for the money, Metricool is best for one brand that wants an inbox for free. BetterSocials is best for businesses whose comments and DMs bring in customers, at $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts.
Pallyy and SocialBee are close behind for small budgets that want DMs in the same inbox as comments. Later, Zernio, Publer and Social Champ round out the eight, each for a narrower job.
Buffer does one reply job, so we sorted the rest by job
Buffer is the yardstick here because its price is easy to work out. Four channels cost $20 a month on annual billing, five cost $25 and six cost $30, per Buffer's pricing page. Each channel you add puts another $5 on the bill.
Buffer's Community inbox answers comments on every plan, YouTube comments included. It doesn't hold DMs, so Instagram and Facebook messages stay in each phone app. That gap is the reason to look elsewhere.
We split reply work into three jobs. Job one is answering comments. Job two is answering DMs in the same inbox. Job three is comment-to-DM, where a keyword in a comment sends the commenter a private message with a link. Buffer does job one. The six tools we priced in full do job one too, and each entry says which of the other two it adds and on which plan.
How we matched tools to each reply job
Every tool we priced in full had to schedule posts and answer comments from its own inbox. We give each price with its billing period, and both figures when the vendor lists both.
We compared prices at matching account counts where the vendors count the same thing. Buffer counts channels, SocialBee counts profiles, Metricool counts brands and BetterSocials counts accounts, so we say which unit each price buys.
Publer and Social Champ get shorter entries with the two things to check on their own pages before you move. The comparison table covers Buffer and the six tools we priced in full.
BetterSocials: comments, DMs and AI replies in one inbox
BetterSocials is best for businesses whose comments and DMs bring in customers. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts, and Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates.
Buffer is cheaper per channel. Four Buffer channels run $20 a month on annual billing, against $24 for BetterSocials Creator. The difference buys job two and job three.
Instagram, Facebook and TikTok DMs land in the same inbox as comments from Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages. Metricool also turns comments into DMs. BetterSocials does it on every plan with unlimited keywords and no flow builder, and on TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages the keyword posts a public reply with your link instead.
AI replies have a Comments section and a DMs section, each set to Off, Draft for me or Reply in my voice. Drafts follow your past replies and the AI rules you write, such as your prices or booking link. Questions wait in Needs reply for your approval unless you switch on Answer questions too.
The stack it replaces is the fairer comparison. Six Buffer channels plus ManyChat Pro come to $30 + $29 = $59 a month at annual rates, with ManyChat Pro's price as of July 2026. BetterSocials Pro covers six accounts for $39 a month billed yearly, with unlimited contacts and a 7-day free trial that needs a card.
Metricool: the free plan with an inbox built in
Metricool is best for one brand that wants an inbox for free. The free plan covers one brand and up to 20 scheduled posts a month, as of October 2026, and its inbox reads YouTube comments. Metricool prices by brand, and each brand holds its own social networks.
The free plan's networks leave out LinkedIn and X. Starter adds LinkedIn and is $25 a month, or $20 billed yearly, for up to five brands, per Metricool's pricing page.
Starter also opens Flows, Metricool's automations. They turn comments into DMs, reply to DMs with keywords and turn story replies into DMs, listed at no extra cost for a limited time. That puts all three reply jobs within reach at $20 a month on yearly billing.
Pallyy: comments, DMs and Google reviews on a small budget
Pallyy is best for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn comments on a small budget. The inbox starts on Pro, which is $25 a month, or $20 billed yearly, as of October 2026.
Pro's inbox holds Instagram DMs and comments, Facebook messages and comments, LinkedIn comments, TikTok comments and Google reviews. It has no YouTube. That makes Pallyy a fit for a local business that wants Google reviews beside its Instagram messages.
If YouTube comments are part of your week, look at Metricool, SocialBee or BetterSocials instead.
SocialBee: an inbox that reaches X and YouTube
SocialBee is best for five profiles with X included. Bootstrap is $29 a month billed monthly, or $290 a year billed annually, for five profiles, one user and one workspace, as of October 2026. SocialBee counts every profile, so two Instagram profiles, one Facebook page and two X profiles make five.
SocialBee's engagement inbox covers Facebook Pages comments, mentions and DMs, and Instagram Business comments, mentions and DMs. It also covers Threads and LinkedIn Company comments and mentions, YouTube comments, and X comments and mentions.
X is the platform here that BetterSocials leaves out, so SocialBee is the pick if X replies matter to you. Accelerate is $49 a month, or $490 a year, for ten profiles, and every plan starts with a 14-day trial.
Later: replies arrive with the Growth plan
Later is best for Instagram and TikTok sellers who need Growth anyway. Starter is $25 a month, or $18.75 billed yearly, and Growth is $50 a month, or $37.50 billed yearly, as of September 2026.
Later's Conversations inbox starts on Growth. It holds Instagram DMs and comments, Facebook DMs and comments, and TikTok comments. It has no YouTube or LinkedIn conversations.
So the reply job on Later costs $37.50 a month at the yearly rate. If you already pay for Growth, the inbox comes with it.
Zernio: replies run by an AI agent
Zernio is best for AI agents and developers running accounts. It sells an API and a hosted MCP server, which lets an assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT read the inbox, reply and post for you. The MCP server costs nothing extra.
Zernio prices per connected account, billed monthly only, as of October 2026. Accounts one and two are free, accounts three to ten cost $6 each and accounts eleven to 100 cost $3 each. Ten accounts come to under fifty dollars a month.
It covers 17 platforms, reads the inbox, replies to comments and sends DMs. Zernio notes that comments, DMs and analytics vary by platform, and the first 10,000 sent DMs a month are free.
Publer: check the inbox before the price
Publer is best for shoppers who'll read the plan details before they switch. Publer lists its plans and prices in its help center.
Check two things there before you switch. First, the price at your own account count. Second, which platforms its inbox answers comments and DMs on, because that decides whether it covers job two.
Social Champ: a pricing page to hold against Buffer's
Social Champ is best for checking against Buffer before you switch.
Confirm which plan includes the social inbox and which platforms that inbox covers. Then price that plan at your account count against Buffer's $5 a channel on annual billing.
Price and reply job, tool by tool
Buffer and the six tools we priced in full line up below. Prices are the lowest listed monthly rate, which is the yearly-billing rate wherever a vendor offers one, in the months given above.
| Tool | Reply job | Price | Inbox covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer | Comments only | $5 a channel | Six platforms, YouTube included |
| BetterSocials | Comments, DMs and AI replies | $24, four accounts | Six platforms, DMs on three |
| Metricool | Comments, messages and Flows | $0 for one brand | YouTube comments, LinkedIn from Starter |
| Pallyy | Comments, DMs and reviews | $20 on Pro | Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, Google |
| SocialBee | Comments, mentions and DMs | $290 a year, five profiles | Six networks, X included |
| Later | Comments and DMs on Growth | $37.50 on Growth | Instagram, Facebook, TikTok comments |
| Zernio | Comments and DMs by API | $0 for two accounts | 17 platforms, varies by platform |
Buffer stays the cheapest per channel when you only need comments answered. Once DMs or keyword messages enter the job, Metricool and BetterSocials beat a Buffer-plus-ManyChat stack on price.
FAQ
What is the best cheaper alternative to Buffer that also replies to comments?
BetterSocials is the best pick when comments and DMs bring in customers. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts, with AI replies in your voice. Metricool has an inbox on its free plan for one brand, and Buffer stays cheaper per channel at $5 on annual billing.
How much does Buffer cost per month?
Buffer charges per channel. Essentials is $5 a channel a month on annual billing, so five channels run $25 a month and six run $30. Each channel you connect adds $5 a month at that rate, so a tenth account takes the bill to $50.
Does Buffer include comment management?
Yes. Buffer's Community inbox is on every plan and answers comments, YouTube comments included. It doesn't hold DMs, so Instagram and Facebook messages stay in each phone app. For DMs in the same inbox as comments, look at Pallyy Pro, SocialBee, Later Growth or BetterSocials.
Is BetterSocials cheaper than Buffer?
Per channel, no. Buffer is $5 a channel on annual billing, so six channels cost $30, and BetterSocials Pro is $39 a month billed yearly for six accounts. Against Buffer plus ManyChat Pro, $59 a month at annual rates for six channels, BetterSocials costs less and adds DMs, keyword comment-to-DM and AI replies in your voice.
Which cheap scheduler answers YouTube comments?
Buffer, Metricool, SocialBee and BetterSocials read YouTube comments, and Metricool does it on its free plan. Pallyy's inbox covers Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok and Google reviews, and Later's covers Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. YouTube has no DM API for any tool, so every reply there is a public comment.
Can a cheap scheduler send a DM when someone comments a keyword?
Yes, on Instagram and Facebook. Metricool's Flows turn comments into DMs from Starter, at no extra cost for a limited time. BetterSocials does it on every plan with unlimited keywords and no flow builder. On TikTok and YouTube no tool can turn a comment into a private DM, so the keyword posts a public reply.
